Better Louisiana supports a strong school accountability system, rigorous K-12 academic standards and a focus on early literacy and math, while building upon a wide array of education choices for students and parents.

  • Strengthen the focus on early literacy and math as the foundations for long-term academic success.
  • Monitor Louisiana’s school and district accountability system to ensure it is transparent for parents and taxpayers, reflective of true school performance, and a strong catalyst to prepare students for college and career training.
  • Increase access to opportunities for all students to have work-based learning experiences and earn postsecondary credit and credentials while still in high school.
  • Strengthen efforts to recruit qualified educators into the teaching profession and retain them.
  • Develop strategies to address chronic truancy and absenteeism which threaten the futures of thousands of Louisiana children.
  • Continue to offer a wide array of school choice options while providing appropriate accountability and oversight.

In Louisiana 29.5% of children are reading on level when they enter kindergarten
Of students in grades 3-8, on average 34% perform at the level of “Mastery” across all major subjects
Of Louisiana students who graduate from high school 74% have earned college credit or an industry credential of value
